Distance isn't a good strategy. Intimacy is, despite the risks. The greatest threat to your business is the myth that someone else, or the market, or that last year was successful, will save you. The only thing that saves you is you - you showing up. In person. You. Human connection solidifies and clarifies claims. We are physical beings, and so presence is proof. In a world flooded with noise, attention-blackholes and abundant high-quality content in a maelstrom of high-frequency distractions, I'm a sucker for flesh and blood in-person smelly experiences. I like it when real dialogue with its pauses, nudges, boring parts, and sincerity can take place, with the warmth of nuance; eye contact can krinkle into smiles, laughter can be shared, body movement and clothing can be appreciated, gestures and stances read, looks reciprocated; true bonds and friendships can form at low-stress dinners, after-parties in hotel lobbies, chance encounters on elevators and in hallways. This is where true business can happen, deals made and colleagues reforged into partners and friends.
